That was six months ago.

It’s now the beginning of June, and the world is sad. The idea of a global pandemic left everyone out of sorts. How could the entire planet be sick at once? However, millions of people had died, proving how deadly the new influenza could be, and the numbers continued to rise each day. The States had tightened up with terms called lockdown and stay-in-place orders. The students at the university where I worked had been on spring break when the Chicago area started closing up, and the administration made the executive decision to extend the student-closure time for an additional week in hopes of things “getting better.” The extension turned into the remainder of the semester.

Then the city I loved went backward in time. Riots struck downtown. Peaceful marches were misunderstood. The city actually rose the bridges over the river like a barricade. I felt like I was living in Divergent, a popular teen-fantasy dystopia. Reality was difficult to discern.

And I’d reached a personal breaking point.

I was going on a trip. With some states slowly opening up in the summer, I picked a place not considered a hot spot and decided to take a vacation. My mind was open. My heart lightening a bit. I entered the Boston airport like I owned the place.

Until I heard my name.

“Lexi? Lexi O’Malley, is that really you?”

The surprise in the male voice turns my head. Hustling down the concourse with my rolling suitcase in tow, I was on my way to a connecting flight for a puddle jumper to Cape Cod Gateway Airport, formerly known as Barnstable Municipal Airport. My destination is the beautiful Cape Cod. I haven’t ever been to the quaint area often hailed as a summertime retreat.

“Lexi?” I stare up into the face of a man I’d seen in my dreams a million times in the past few months. His voice haunted me, perpetuating the loss of him. I recognize those moss-green eyes behind his glasses instantly.

“Jared?”

“What are you doing here?” we say in unison and then awkwardly laugh. The scene would be straight out of a comedy unless you took in the sparseness of the airport and the unmistakable presence of people wearing facial masks, which were mandated by the government.

How in the world had he known it was me?

“I’m catching another flight,” I finally tell him. “I’m headed to Cape Cod.”

He’s looking over my head at the departure board, narrowing his eyes. “I’m trying to get back to LA, but my flight’s been delayed. It’s a weather thing.”

The weather had been crystal clear when I left Chicago, but Boston currently hosts heavy cloud cover. I only need to get to the Cape, and then the heavens can open for all I care.

“What are you doing in Boston?” I ask.

Sheepishly, he scratches at the back of his neck and lowers his lids. “I’m from here.”

“Really?” I don’t mean it as derisively as it sounds, but I’m so surprised. I know very little about Jared Kane other than how good he feels when we become one.
